Mum - Pauline Smith: Played by Cheryl Hall


Smithy's father was a violent man who knocked both Smithy and his brother around until they were old enough to hit him back. When asked by Sam Harker if Smithy did infact hit his father back, Smithy denied it, saying "It was easier to just go out with me mates."

His brother has only been spoken of in one episode (Soft Talking) where Smithy is reminicing about the birth of his brother, remembering looking in the incubator at him and poking him until he cried, getting himself in trouble. Smithy's brother was, at the time, a council worker "who thinks all coppers are tossers."

However, in 2007 (Killer On The Run) Smithy's flat was broken into by Ryan Jones, a disturbed criminal who blamed Smithy for the destruction of his marriage which had lead him to kill his wife with a meat cleaver. The only thing that had been taken was the address to Smithy's mother. Ryan was scared off when Smithy rang and left a message on the answerphone whilst on his way over and Smithy was to discover his mother, although shaken, was physically fine.

No mention of Smithy's father was made in this episode which leaves us to speculation that they have split up or he passed away (possibly during the time whilst he was at SO19 to make up for having it not mentioned on screen.) Of course I could be reading too much into it and the continuity has just been forgotten. It's a shame his brother wasn't mentioned in the episode too... not even a picture was discovered when she proudly displayed a picture of Smithy in his uniform on the side.
